Picton Gazette

JULY 4, 2019

Summer is off to a great start at the Library.

Alongside our many programmes for kids that will run all summer long, we’ve put together a list of some fun highlights from July that are suitable for everyone.

For those who are musically inclined, join Louise Ford and Debbie Shaw on Fri., July 5th for a morning filled with music, learning and fun for all ages! Louise has been performing in the Quinte area for over 40 years. She is the musical director for Albury Church, as well as a music teacher with Arden’s Music. Debbie Shaw has enjoyed playing the flute with the Quinte Symphony for almost 30 years and her passion for music is evident in her playing many styles of music. The concert starts at 11am at the Picton Branch, and tickets are $5. Get them at peclibrary.org/events.

On Sat., July 6th from 3-3:45 p.m. , stop by the Picton Branch for a free talk by Heather Coffey of Fiddlehead Farms. Heather will be sharing tips about eating locally through the seasons, along with recipes that can be customized to make the best use of what’s fresh in the moment. She’ll give advice on easy vegetables you can grow at home, and will be happy to answer any questions about produce or growing your own food.

Our Escape Room is ready to go and will open to the public on July 10th after our beta test on July 1st. Check the website for exact dates and to purchase tickets. This is just the type of outside the box activity that will help you bond with friends and family, challenge your own thinking patterns, and maybe learn a thing or two. Info and tickets are available at peclibrary.org/escape and all proceeds go towards our Time To Renew campaign to expand the Picton Branch. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for kids (15 and under). All proceeds support our Picton expansion. We’ve been working hard on this one; it will not disappoint.

We’re also very excited to announce at the end of the month we’ll be partnering with Shatterbox Theatre for an evening of music and drama! With the help of popular PEC/Belleville based funk band Cue The Funk, we will be tearing it down at the Picton Armoury Mess Hall, with some peeks at past, present and future Shatterbox shows. Proceeds will be shared between the Library and the Theatre. The LGBTQ+ Alternative Youth Group is ongoing, every Thursday from 3-5 p.m. in Picton. This group is open and inclusive to queer youth and their allies, so please drop in.

Our tech department also has some great offerings for summer. We have a Vinyl Cutting workshop on Mon., July 8th in Picton from 12:3–2pm. Staff will assist participants in using the software and setting up the vinyl cutter. The programme is free but registration is required.

There’s also a Google Maps workshop on Wed., July 17th at 10:30 a.m. in Picton. Get your questions answered and learn some tips and tricks.

We hope you’ll join us for some or all of these activities. In this busy season it’s easy to feel pulled in lots of different directions.

Remember to take some time to relax and just have fun.
