A diverse week at the library is ahead. On Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Picton Town Hall on Ross Street author Joyce Nelson will be on hand to discuss issues as presented in her seven books.
This is a joint presentation by the library and the Council of Canadians, Quinte. Lynne Rochon who has been the driving force for bringing Joyce Nelson to Prince Edward County says it is a must for every thinking citizen to attend. Joyce is an award-winning freelance writer/researcher whose seventh book, published in April of this year entitled Bypassing Dystopia: Hope-filled Challenges to Corporate Rule explores global examples of active and creative resistance to the grip of corporatism on economies and imagination. Her previous work Beyond Banksters is an “eye-opening, must-read expose of a ravenous financial system” the review goes on to say “Provocative, profound, challenging and suffused with perceptive clarity.” Beyond Banksters, now in its fourth printing is an important read.
Now on to our second, very different event for the week. On Sunday, Oct. 28 at the Picton library branch from 6:30-9 p.m. drop in for a Night at the Library! This event is a creative play on the Night at the Museum movie. Instead of a museum after dark where the displays come alive, you will enter the library after dark and literary characters and writers come to life. Library information technology co–ordinator Julie Lane-Ynetma, who, as some of you may know is multi-talented, is in charge of the actors. She and her troupe will entertain throughout the building and the evening.
That is not all comprising this escapist evening! Gayle and Bob Osbourne are contributing their expertise and props to create a Haunted House. For years their transformation of the Hicks Funeral Home on Halloween has encouraged children in car and van loads to Centre Street. You can hear the screams from our house two doors up and across the street. So, for this special edition at the library, enter at your peril and be released only if you pay up!
Pumpkins have been donated by Laundry Farms and a challenge has been issued by Amy and Edward Shubert the masterminds behind the gala event. Pick up a pumpkin at the library (available Tuesday, Oct. 23) and apply your pumpkin carving artistry. Return your masterpiece to the library on Oct. 27 for display at the Gala and to be judged by Gayle and Bob. The pumpkins will then be offered for sale that evening. Just think, on Oct. 31 you can have a prize-winning, pumpkin work of art on your doorstep!
But that is not all! There will be treats galore: desserts by Butter Dream Cakes, Karlyn’s Cookies, Lakeshore Farms, and Purtelleighs Bakery. Wine is being donated Rosehall Run and cider from the County Cider Company. Items for sale that evening will include library mugs designed by Tim Snyder, and posters and t-shirts with Mile Murtanovski’s art work taken from The Night at the Library advertising poster. If you are wondering what to expect at the event look at Murtanovski’s poster and imagine! It will be a transporting evening of fun and treats and congenial company – all in support of the Picton expansion.
Amy and Edward Shubert have worked tirelessly for weeks with their committee to make this a unique, memorable and profitable event. There will be countless door prizes with draws going on all evening. Come in costume, dress up or dress down, but plan to attend this gala event. Tickets are $50 each, available at any branch of the library.
