Synopsis:
During the nineteenth century, Captain Downes was a prominent citizen of Picton, holding such
positions as Justice of the Peace, Captain of the Local Militiea and County Cleark Treasurer.
His residence, after 1857, is still preserved at the corner of Downes Avenue and Main
Street, Picton. During his time here he created a number of pencil interpretations of
Prince Edward County, twelve of which are reproduced by Prince Edward Historical Society for
all to enjoy.
